April is an exciting month at Good Harvest! Check in with the managers of each department as they share interesting food news, upcoming specials, and more. This month you'll hear about Earth Month, our soon to arrive organic planters, how your old eyeglasses and sunglasses can make a huge impact on lives of the less fortunate, fun food holidays and more!
Produce: It’s garden time! Starting Earth Day we will start carrying organic planters all the way through June from West Star Farms. Look for amazing organic varieties of herbs, vegetables, and flowers! We will also carry West Star Potting Soil. We have been getting our planters in through West Star Farms since our store opened in 2005. West Star has been in business since 1998 and is located in Cottage Grove. Their passion is to provide the highest quality, strongest and healthiest certified organic plants that will have the greatest potential for successful growth. They value the principles and practices of organic growing and respect the land while continually managing sustainable practices. Spring is right around the corner, now is the time to start getting ready!

Grocery: In April, look forward to our Earth Day celebration! Also, we are going to be putting a heavy focus on our wonderful local companies. Look for local items featured on our end cap displays, and we will be featuring different local vendors every week – each Friday we will highlight two local companies and offer a significant discount! To tie in with Earth Day, many of our eco-friendly cleaning products are going on sale to help do some spring cleaning without the negative impact of harsh chemicals. Along with all the wonderful things Earth Day stands for, we feel it’s very important to support local products not only to reduce carbon emissions by cutting down on the environmental impact of transportation, but to also help foster local economic growth and strong community pride. This is why we’re so grateful to be an outlet for many different local vendors who make a wide variety of wonderful food items.

Wellness: Donate your used eyeglasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses throughout April in the Wellness Department! Join us in supporting natural body care company Alaffia’s Used Eyeglass Drive for Togo, West Africa. The World Health Organization estimates corrective lenses could improve the eyesight of one fourth of the world’s population. A pair of glasses can cost four months’ salary in some countries, when in North America over 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are thrown away each year. Even sunglasses are essential to eye health; they help prevent cataracts and damage caused by debris. There will be a donation box in the department all month long for your used eyeglasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses. Alaffia was founded to empower communities in West Africa through the fair trade of their indigenous resources. Their eyeglass drive is another initiative along with their recycled bicycle program in their efforts to provide community empowerment and gender quality improvements in Togo, West Africa.

Café & Deli: Did you know that April is Bacon Month? Bacon or "bacoun" was a Middle English term used to refer to all pork in general. The term bacon comes from various Germanic and French dialects. It derives from the French "bako", Old High German "bakko", and Old Teutonic "backe", all of which refer to the back. There are breeds of pigs particularly raised for bacon, notably the Yorkshire and Tamworth. Join us Mondays during the month of April as we feature a bacon dish on our hot lunch bar. Also, celebrate this year's Egg Salad Week, which is April 21-27 and is sponsored by the American Egg Board, and is dedicated to the many delicious uses for all of the Easter eggs that have been cooked, colored, hidden and found. A deli staple, our egg salad is made with organic cage free eggs, organic mayo and love.
