Department News for the New Year

Produce: Want luck and fortune for the new year? How about good health?

Ring in the new year with delicious and organic cabbage from our product department! Once considered a “poor man’s food”, cabbage is now gaining recognition as a nutrient rich medicinal food. Its surprising healing properties include fighting infectious skin conditions, strengthening weak bones, and lessening arthritis pain. Cabbage boasts two nutrients that have been shown to improve osteoarthritis pain and keep the disease from getting worse: Vitamins C and K. Just a half a cup of cooked cabbage provides 100 percent of daily Vitamin K needs and over half of Vitamin C requirements. (From The Kitchen Table Book, by the editors of FC&A Medical Publishing). - Mark, Produce Manager

Grocery: A hot cup of tea is always a great choice during these cold winter months.

That’s why for the month of January, many of our most popular tea lines are on sale! In particular we’d like to highlight the Organic India line. Organic India teas are not only Certified Organic and Non-GMO, but they adhere to many other ethical practices. They use biodynamic agriculture, a system of crop rotation, and natural planting calendars to ensure that the land will remain usable for generations to come. Organic India founded and adheres to Earth Seer practices, which are an outstanding set of business practices and ethical standards, and we encourage you to check out the Organic India website to find out more. So enjoy a warm tea during the harsh Wisconsin Winter and drink with peace of mind. - Michael, Assistant Grocery Manager

Deli/Café: Have you seen the new Olive and Antipasti Bar?

Italian giardiniera is also called "sotto aceti", which translates to "under vinegar", is a common Italian term for pickled foods. It is typically eaten as an antipasto or with salads. Ours is made with all organic and gluten free ingredients including, Carrots, celery, cauliflower, bell peppers, oregano and chili flakes. Did you know that feta is one of the oldest cheeses still in production? Try our Marinated Feta Salad, made in house with organic feta cheese, fresh rosemary and lemon zest. The earliest references to cheese production in Greece date back to the 8th century BC and the technology used to make cheese from sheep's/goat's milk, is described in Homer's Odyssey. Feta cheese also has the highest ANDI (Aggregate Nutritional Density Index) score of all cheeses at 21. - Kelly, Café/Deli Manager

Meat: Start off the New Year right with chicken, a healthy lean source for your protein needs.

We have a variety of pork and beef roasts for the crock pot to provide a cozy and fragrant home to walk into after a day at work or out doing errands, and a delicious dinner for the family. Don’t forget our seafood selection.  Stop in for some salmon or cod.  Our selection changes weekly to provide freshness and variety. If you missed out on the pot roast sale in autumn, take advantage of our next event which will take place January 20 – 26. - Brian, Meat Department Manager
