Healthy Living Tips

Sometimes the best way to start major change is by starting small.  So often people put too much pressure on themselves by trying to tackle a major goal by starting too big.  It can be overwhelming when we place a goal on ourselves to “lose 30 lbs” or to “stop eating unhealthy foods” or to “exercise every day”.  Whatever your goal, it’s important to remember to give yourself time to achieve it and also to take small steps every day that eventually become habit.  It can be so rewarding when you allow  yourself to acknowledge the small wins which then lead to bigger ones.

Here are some recommendations for getting started with living a healthier lifestyle.  Try just one to start and see how that goes.  After a while, add another, and then another.  Give yourself time to adjust to each transition and before you know it, you will be living healthy and eating better without even trying.

  • Eat organic produce:  You don’t have to change your entire diet to organic right away, but by choosing to add some fresh organic produce into your regular diet you will be well on your way.  Try starting with switching out your fruit bowl or fresh vegetables.  Organic produce is free from harmful chemicals and tastes better too.  Also, try to incorporate local produce into your diet.  It’s fresher and will last longer.
  • Reduce processed food intake:  If you don’t think you can eliminate processed food all together, consider the kind of processed foods you are putting in your body.  Look for foods that are minimally processed and only have fresh ingredients or whole grains.  Read the labels; the ingredients should be minimal.  Try switching to organic pasta or grains and eliminate foods such as cereal or crackers.  Start with one and then add another.  Grains such as oats, quinoa and brown rice are healthy and the organic/all natural varieties are minimally processed leaving the health benefits in tact.
  • Reduce sugar intake:  Sugar in all forms is addictive.  These days you can find sugar in just about anything and comes in many different forms.  Declaring to quit sugar is no easy feat.  Just like quitting smoking, quitting sugar is just as difficult or even more so for some people.  Start by reducing your sugar intake in smaller increments.  It’s ok to allow yourself a daily treat but also consider other foods you are getting sugar.  If you are having morning cereal, skip that cookie later in the day.  Maybe you like protein bars for breakfast or a snack…they are loaded with sugar so cut it out somewhere else later in the day.  Read labels and each day make a choice about what you will allow yourself.  Eventually, try quitting simple/processed sugars and replace with a natural sweetener like honey and stay away from anything artificial as they will create more cravings.  Over time, you will find it easier to either quit sugar or at least choose when you will allow yourself that decadent treat.
  • Incorporate healthy fats:  Include healthy fats in your diet such as coconut oil, avocados, olive oil, fish, nuts & seeds.  The health benefits are hefty and they also make you feel fuller longer.  This is easy to do.  Replace your oils, add some avocado or coconut oil to your daily smoothie and buy snacking nuts from the bulk aisle to save money on packaging.
  • Eat REAL food:  If you really want to challenge yourself and feel you are ready, try eating only real food.  This means only food that comes from plants and animals.  Skip the processed foods, frozen dinners, pizza deliveries and simple sugars.  Meals consist of lean meats , poultry and fish, fresh vegetables/fruit, organic dairy and eggs… you get the idea.  Not only will you feel better, you will feel more energized and drop the pounds at the same time.
